Lay Proof Reader

A lay member is required by the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) Examination Question Development Committee. The committee is responsible for producing the questions used in the final professional examinations for the UK specialist public health qualification, 'Membership of the Faculty of Public Health' (MFPH) of the Royal College of Physicians.

The Part B MFPH examination consists of 6 questions of 8 minutes each, together known as the Objective Structured Public Health Examination (OSPHE).

Each question outlines a professional scenario which candidates then have to respond to, using a role-player from the speciality or an actor. Each question is approximately 10 pages long (around 1,500-2,200 words) and includes background material, candidate guidance, examiner guidance and a scripted scenario. Usually 4 examinations are held each year, with proof reading done at least 4 weeks before each examination date.

As part of their responsibilities for advising on the content, structure and ongoing development of the examination, the lay member is required to proof read questions. The proof reader plays a vital role in the question development process, and reads the material after production and peer review, checking the consistency of style, English grammar, typographic or spelling errors, and readability. In addition, the proof reader checks that candidate guidance, marking schedules and scripted text are also aligned and coherent.

We are looking for someone with an excellent grasp of English language, meticulous attention to detail, and an ability to work to tight timescales, which is occasionally needed. Some experience of medical and/or public health material is desirable but definitely not essential and the work would suit persons from a wide variety of professional backgrounds.

Colleagues in FPH will support the lay member with any training and familiarisation with technical matters as necessary.

The successful candidate would join a small team who work mainly by email and phone, but would have the opportunity to meet at examination sittings and when necessary as a member of the FPH OSPHE Executive Committee.

The post is not remunerated but travelling and other reasonable expenses are paid. Expressions of interest are invited and candidates will be welcome to meet and/or discuss the post with Russell Ampofo, Head of Education and Training.

The deadline for applications is Thursday 31 July 2008 and applications are encouraged from a variety of backgrounds.
