FPH welcomes the new salt reduction targets

The Food Standards Agency has published revised salt reduction targets for 2012. These voluntary targets are more challenging than previously, aiming to reduce people’s average salt intake to 6g a day.

Professor Alan Maryon-Davis, FPH President, says: "We very much welcome these new targets. The food industry needs a tough challenge if it’s to speed up its pace towards lower salt levels. Savoury snacks, burgers, cereals and other children's favourites must be a particular priority to help protect the next generation from the potential damage caused by high blood pressure."

Consumption of salt has declined in the UK, but on average people still consume 8.6g of salt every day. Around 75% of the salt we eat is already present in the food we buy. The targets have particularly been set for foods that contain the most salt: bread, meat products and cereals, and foods such as pizza and ready meals.
