Jamie Oliver: Serving up Good Public Health
Faculty of Public Health President, Professor Rod Griffiths, has awarded celebrity TV chef Jamie Oliver one of public health's top prizes for his 'Feed Me Better' campaign.
Although the Alwyn Smith Prize is usually only awarded to public health specialists, there was strong support within the Faculty's membership to award this to Jamie Oliver in recognition of his momentous achievement in promoting a healthier diet in schools.
Presenting the prize at Mr Oliver's restaurant, Fifteen, Professor Rod Griffiths said: “Good public health is all about preventing poor health in the first place. Giving children a balanced diet provides them with the healthy start they need, not just to prevent future disease but to improve their well-being and educational development. We need more champions like Jamie to work with us to give everyone the best possible chance of achieving good health.”
On accepting the award, Mr Oliver said: “ It's a great honour to receive this award, particularly as it comes from such an esteemed body as the Faculty of Public Health. I just hope that the Faculty members can join with me in helping to push forward the much needed changes to school meals and to our childrens' nutrition in general.”
