Faculty of Public Health praises smoking ban

The Faculty of Public Health today hailed the overwhelming decision to institute smokefree legislation in all pubs, clubs and bars as a victory for public health and common sense.

Faculty President, Prof Rod Griffiths said, on hearing the news: "It's been a long and hard fought battle - but worth it. This vote demonstrated that the public's health in England is as valuable as that in the rest of the UK . Tens of thousands of people will soon be able to go to work safe in knowledge that they'll no longer have to face a life-threatening substance - tobacco smoke. This is a tremendous victory for public health."

The Faculty is a longstanding supporter of the Clean the Air Coalition and has actively campaigned for smokefree workplaces and public places in the UK .
