All posts in England and Wales will be recruited in accordance with the 2012 National ST1 person specification. There is supplementary guidance available for applicants assessing their eligibility for the public health training scheme.
Demonstration of Foundation Competences (for medical applicants only)
In addition to the person specification, applicants should consider the following guidance forms to appropriately demonstrate medical foundation competences.
If you have not undertaken a UK foundation programme within the past three years, you may be required (based on your responses on your application form) to submit alternative evidence by asking at least one consultant who has supervised you for at least three months since 1 August 2009 to confirm your achievement of foundation competences. Over the sum of the forms that you submit you must ensure that all competences are covered. There are two 'Alternative Certificates' available for download: one for specialties with acute medical responsibilities (Form A) and one for specialties without acute medical responsibilities (Form B).
You may submit more than one Alternative Certificate from different posts in order to show all your evidence of achievement of all competencies but the certificates must relate to posts undertaken for at least three months each since August 2009. Please ensure your Alternative Certificate(s) A and/or Alternative Certificate(s) B are uploaded with your application.
There is also a list of specialties with acute medical responsibilities.

Competition ratios
The competition ratios are provided purely as a guidance to applicants. The availability of posts within any individual programme can vary considerably from one year to the next and therefore there may be wild fluctuations in the competition ratios year by year. We therefore provide a cumulative competition ratio for each programme which may be of more assistance in providing a longer term view.
Competition for posts should only be one aspect that you consider when deciding where to apply. You should also consider the detail of the individual training arrangements within a programme. There are also external factors to bear in mind such as the geographical location of the programme and potential social networks.
Further information on applicant success rates is available here.

The application process
- Applicants successful at long listing (eligibility testing) will be invited to a full day assessment centre (written tests of numerical and critical reasoning and a situational judgement [scenario based] test). Assessment centres will be held in London, Liverpool and Bristol
- Assessment centre will be held 19 January 2012
- Applicants will need to reach a minimum standard at the tests of numeracy and critical reasoning. Applicants passing this standard will then be ranked according to their scores at assessment
- Applicants at the top end of the ranking for written tests will be invited to a half-day selection centre (face-to-face assessment)
- Selection centre during the period 21-22 February 2012
- First offers will be issued by 9 March 2012
Selection centre will be held in the East Midlands at Imago, Burleigh Court, Loughborough, Leicestershire. The location has good transport links. The selection centre will run across two days: 21-22 February. Candidates should expect to be at the centre for approximately four and a half hours in total. Refreshments will be provided.
Selection centre test elements include face-to-face interviews in steeplechase format with each candidate interviewed by six short panels. Candidates will also sit a written test of qualitative and quantitative analytic skills and a group exercise. Full details of the venue and requirements of candidates will be sent to those applicants invited to attend selection centre.
All elements of the selection centre will be scored by trained assessors and the total scores will be combined with scores from assessment centre to give a final ranked score.
Candidates wishing to apply should ensure they are available for these dates as alternatives will not be provided.
Receiving offers
In line with the national timeline for Round 1 recruitment all first offers will be made by 9 March 2012.
Your final score is based on combined results from the written tests at assessment centre and all the marks from selection centre. There is a minimum score set for consideration for appointment. You will be ranked according to your score:
1. If your score is below the minimum level we have set, you will receive notification that you have been unsuccessful this year.
2. Offers will be made in meritocratic order with the highest ranked candidate receiving an offer for their first-choice preference. Not all candidates will receive an offer for their first preference if successful at interview and may receive an offer for a lower preference depending on their rank and the number of posts available within the different deaneries.
3. Applicants who receive a Round 1 offer are given an option to 'hold' that offer until 19 March if awaiting offers for a higher preference in this specialty or from other specialties in Round 1. For further details, please refer to the applicant guide on the MMC website.
4. In 2012 Public Health will be using the UK Offers website for the management of offers following the selection-centre process. Please see the MMC website for further details on this process.
Please contact the recruitment team at emsha.publichealthrecruitment.nhs.net if you have any questions about the offers process.
