Decision to disband obesity group 'baffling'

The government's decision to disband its expert advisory group on obesity is "baffling", according to Professor Lindsey Davies, President of the Faculty of Public Health.

Professor Davies said: "The Faculty of Public Health is deeply concerned by the government’s baffling decision to disband its expert group on obesity. Only a month ago, as part of its Call to Action on Obesity, the government said it would be working with a range of partners to reverse the tide of obesity.

"The obesity crisis is estimated to cost the UK £20 billion in lost productivity, and it is vital for the public’s health that government policy is based on evidence of what works. Expert groups provide that evidence - and are well placed to help governments understand how to use it best.

"We are still waiting for a comprehensive, evidence-based obesity strategy. In the absence of an expert group, this could be further away than ever."
