The results are in...

Following the ballot on the Board's proposal to seek Royal College status, the results are as follows:

In total, 1,125 votes were received, of which 2 were deemed invalid (therefore, 1,123 valid votes were counted).

Of the 1,123 valid votes, 936 (83.3%) voted in favour of the Board’s proposal and 187 (16.7%) voted against the proposal.

FPH would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took part in the ballot.

From the President

Wow! - 83.3%! That's a pretty resounding yes vote for seeking Royal College status and a clear mandate for the November Board to make the momentous decision to set the ball rolling.

Instant results shouldn't be expected though. As for other Royal Colleges, we will need to be incorporated by Royal charter, a process that can take up to two years. Once we get the go-ahead, we will need to submit an application to the Privy Council, and also apply separately through the Ministry of Justice for the 'Royal' appellation. It's all a bit archaic and Byzantine, but I have no doubt it will be worth the effort.

In the meantime it is business as usual here at FPH headquarters:

  • Vice-President Steve George continues his work on shaping the way revalidation will be rolled out for PH consultants.
  • Academic Registrar David Williams adds further refinements to the training programme and exams, including preliminary work on 'modular credentialing'.
  • CEO Paul Scourfield and I are looking at ways of working with government and the NHS to beef up the PH leadership programme.
  • Treasurer Liz Scott hovers above us all wielding her cost-cutting axe to help the organisation survive these dark days of crunching credit.

Just space to remind you to send in any interesting or amusing bits of news for the People section of ph.com, the deadline is 5pm on Friday 7 November, all submissions should be sent to news@fph.org.uk

All the best
Alan

Launch of 'Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives'
The new toolkit for developing local strategies to tackle overweight and obesity, 'Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives', has now been launched.

Produced in association with the National Heart Forum, the Department of Health, the Department for Children, Schools and Families, and Foresight, the toolkit provides a comprehensive collection of information and tools to assist with delivering current national and local policies.

It purposefully does not provide detailed information about care and treatment of overweight and obesity, but rather offers signposts to well established and comprehensive material covered elsewhere.

Download your copy of the toolkit from the resources section of the website.

Rimonabant use suspended by EMA
FPH has welcomed the announcement by the European Medicine Agency (EMA) to suspend the marketing authorisation for rimonabant across the EU. This is due to the unacceptable risk of serious psychiatric side-effects, and because the effectiveness in clinical practice is more limited than was expected on the basis of the clinical trials.

FPH had raised concerns with the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) about the drug's safety, particularly with regards to mental health, the poor quality of evidence, and NICE's approval of the drug, which appeared to contradict its earlier proposals.
