From the President

As part of my job as President I've visited most parts of the UK now, (we're waiting for the NHS in Northern Ireland to settle down a bit before paying them a visit). But it is clear to me that the UK is a scattered entity and it's all too easy to miss out some of the more far-flung places, particularly our many islands.

So I was delighted to accept an invitation from Vijay Kumar, to address the Inter-Island Public Health Forum's conference held this year in Gibraltar (not quite an island but sharing many of the same health and healthcare problems). Vijay is the current chair of the forum and DPH for the Gibraltar Health Authority. Other islands in the forum include Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man, Isle of Wight, Orkneys, Shetland and the Western Isles, not to mention even further flung places like the Caribbean islands, the Maldives and Hong Kong.

The relative isolation of islands can present obvious difficulties in accessing health services – particularly tertiary and perhaps secondary hospital services, depending on the size of the population, but also in some cases primary care because of problems with recruitment. Add to that such issues as access to fresh water supply, vulnerability to fog-bound transport links, coastal flooding, wildly fluctuating seasonal population shifts, lack of island-specific demographic and epidemiological data, and health inequalities, you begin to see that islands can present real public health challenges.

It was a most interesting conference in a fascinating setting and a great example of a public health network that has been working really well for many years now.

And finally, don't forget to vote on College status. No stamp needed!

All the best
Alan

Justin McCracken, CEO, Health Protection Agency

FPH would like to invite its members to attend this event, which will be held in the Henry Wellcome Auditorium, Wellcome Collection, 183 Euston Road, London, NW1 2BE. FPH President, Prof Alan Maryon-Davis, will be chairing the event. Registration for the lecture will begin at 4.15pm.

The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception to be held in the Williams Lounge from 6.00pm.

We hope you will be able to attend what promises to be a stimulating and thought-provoking event.

Protecting children from secondhand smoke
Since the implementation of the law banning smoking in workplaces and enclosed public places, most adults no longer have to breathe other people's tobacco smoke. But children receive little protection. In fact, around five million children in UK households are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke.

To help raise awareness, FPH and ASH have published a position statement which summarises the health impact of secondhand smoke on children, an information leaflet for parents and carers and an information poster for display in GP practices, pharmacies, health and social care settings.

You can read more about protecting children from secondhand smoke and other tobacco related issues on the FPH website at www.fph.org.uk/resources/tobacco/

Traffic-light food labelling
FPH, National Heart Forum and Heart of Mersey have produced a joint position statement calling for implementation of traffic-light food labelling on all food and drink products, to help consumers make healthier choices.

The statement also shows why percentage guideline daily amounts present barriers to healthy choices by potentially misleading consumers. It also informed an in-depth article in the Indepenant on Sunday (See FPH in the news).

More information can be found on the website at www.fph.org.uk/resources/AtoZ/#foodlabelling

Look out for the membership consultation on revalidation
The aim of this anonymous survey is to find what your needs regarding revalidation will be. Your answers will also help us – officers and staff – to improve the functions and services of the organisation. We very much hope you will spare a few minutes to complete and return the survey.

The aggregated findings will be made available to all members and communicated via the FPH monthly email bulletin and the website. This information will go towards informing our strategic planning for 2009 and the development of FPH's revalidation scheme for public health professionals.

The survey will be emailed to all members in the week beginning 6 October 2008.
