Food labelling announcement is good news for everyone's health

People will be able to make healthier choices about the food they eat with the introduction of a new, consistent system of front of pack labelling, the Health Minister Anna Soubry announced today.

Dr John Middleton, Vice President for Policy at the Faculty of Public Health, said:

"This announcement about food labelling is excellent news for everyone's health. It is the result of a long campaign by FPH and other organisations to make it easier for people to make healthy choices about the food they buy. These personal decisions about what we eat contribute to the overall problem of obesity, which costs the NHS around £4bn each year to treat. That cost is one reason why it is so important that people have clear, easy to read, information in shops and supermarkets.

"The detail of the scheme will be crucial, and the criteria for traffic light labelling will need to be robust. We await the implementation of the scheme with great interest, and hope that all food manufacturers see the benefits and take it up."
