Good friends in high places

Congratulations to Darlington Borough Council on winning the Health and Social Care Award at the Local Government Chronicle Awards (LGC) 2015.

The award, which was sponsored by the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) and the Public Health Action Support Team (PHAST) CIC, was in recognition of Darlington's innovative Good Friends scheme. This involves a network of people who keep an eye on their older and vulnerable neighbours. They provide support and friendship and assist their neighbours with a range of issues to help them live safely and independently.

The scheme, which builds on an innovative alliance between Age UK Darlington, the police and Neighbourhood Watch, was launched in October 2013. By June 2014 there were 645 Good Friends recruited, helping 238 neighbours.

Pictured (left to right) are Catherine Brogan, Chief Executive of PHAST, FPH President John Ashton, Seth Pearson, Partnership Director at Darlington Borough Council, Gillian Peel, Chief Executive of Age UK Darlington, and awards host, TV presenter Sue Perkins.

Highly commended in the awards category was North East Lincolnshire Council for Beyond Buzzwords.

The LGC Awards were held at Grosvenor House, London on 11 March 2015.
