McEwen Award

Foundation

On demitting office of President in 2001, Professor Jim McEwen and his wife Pippy McEwen generously endowed a prize starting in 2002 to be known as the 'McEwen Award'.

Funding

The maximum value of the award is to be determined by the Finance Sub-committee and reviewed every three years, subject to the continuing availability of funds.

Scope

Between 2002 and 2006 the prize was awarded for the best performance in the Part II MFPHM Examination of the Faculty of Public Health.

In 2006, due to changes in the Faculty's examinations and in agreement with both Jim and Pippy McEwen, future awards are made to the candidate with the highest score in the Faculty's Part B/OSPHE MFPH Examination (UK), in the period from March to February each year, provided at least one candidate scores an overall mark consistent with B grades on average, or above.

Eligibility

All candidates who have passed the Part B/OSPHE MFPH Examination (UK) between 1 March and 28 February each year will be eligible for consideration.

Eligibility for the competition will be restricted to those recognised as SpR/SpT/StR in PHM/PH on the date of passing the Part B/OSPHE MFPH Examination.

Value

£100 agreed in 2002.

Frequency of award

Annually beginning in 2002, funds permitting.

Closing date

The closing date will be 1 February of each year.

Adjudication

If more than one candidate is eligible for the award, adjudication is to be undertaken by the OSPHE Executive Committee comprising:

  • the Chair of the Part B/OSPHE MFPH examiners;
  • two Part B/OPSHE MFPH examiners;
  • the Assistant Academic Registrar.

Criteria for award

If no candidate has scored the required level in any one year then no prize will be awarded and the funds carried over in the Trusts for future years.

The award may be withheld at the discretion of the Faculty of Public Health.

Announcement

The decision of the Adjudication Committee will be reported to the Board and announced at the Annual Faculty Award Ceremony.

Presentation

The prize will consist of a certificate and a cash sum and shall be awarded on the occasion of the Faculty's Annual General Meeting.
