Prime Minister's commitment to improving mental health welcomed
The Faculty of Public Health (FPH) welcomes Prime Minister Theresa May's stated commitment to improving mental health and mental health services.
Each year, mental ill-health costs the economy over £70 billion, equivalent to 4.5% of GDP, through lost productivity, social benefits and healthcare.
Investment in population mental health generates a big return. Effective, evidence-based interventions include promoting and protecting the wellbeing of children, parents and families; the building of stronger communities; and mental health and wellbeing at work. These all bring substantial individual, social and economic benefits.
Early detection and intervention when problems arise get better outcomes and are more cost effective than a delayed response.
The system would therefore be greatly strengthened and improved by increased mental health resource and expertise in primary care.
