Most of the regulations and procedures which apply to higher specialist training are found in A Guide to Specialist Registrar Training, informally known as the Orange Book, produced by the NHS Executive.

The enrolment process enables the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) to oversee and monitor the progress of registrars throughout their training, make recommendations to the regulators, the General Medical Council (GMC) and the UK Public Health Register (UKPHR), and maintain national standards of training by ensuring the excellence of the training provided in programmes
