The Cochrane prize

Purpose

The Faculty of Public Health awards a prize each year to an undergraduate student to support an educational activity in the field of public health medicine. Candidates must be bona fide students at a medical school in the United Kingdom at the time of application.

Value

The value of the prize will be determined by the Board of the Faculty depending on the funds available and the merits of the application, but will not normally exceed £250 to any one individual or for any one project.

Funding

Applications are invited to provide funds in support of a relevant educational activity, including for example:

  • overseas travel to undertake a public health medicine elective
  • expenses of a public health research project
  • a scholarship for a student undertaking an intercalated BSc (or similar) degree course in a public health science
  • other innovative and imaginative educational projects in public health medicine or related sciences.

Criteria

The application must provide clear statements of:

  • The aim(s) and/or expected benefits of the project for which support is requested.
  • The methods by which these will be achieved.
  • The precise intended use of the funds.

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT APPLICATIONS COMPLY WITH ALL THE REGULATIONS FOR THE PRIZE.

The application should be accompanied by:

  • A brief curriculum vitae of the candidate.
  • A statement of support from the relevant Head of Academic Department of Public Health.
  • A statement on whether or not funds for the same project have been sought from other sources.

IMPORTANT

The application statement should not identify the candidate by name or by medical school. The applicant’s full name and address should be supplied on a separate sheet of paper (to maintain anonymity).

Assessment

Applications will be assessed by adjudicators appointed by the Faculty Education Committee who will recommend awards to the Board. Entries will be assessed on the following criteria:

  • Relevance to public health.
  • Originality of proposed work.
  • Scientific quality.
  • Evidence of commitment.
  • Effective use of funds.

Presentation of Award

The prize will be held annually and awards of a medal and cheque made at the Faculty's Annual General Meeting. The winner will be invited to attend the Annual Dinner as the President's guest. Obligations

Recipients of awards will be expected to submit a report to the Faculty within two months of completing their project and will be encouraged to offer suitable reports for publication in ‘Public Health Medicine’ or other suitable journals. Reports should not normally exceed 2,500 words.
