The assessment criteria against which applications for entry to the Specialist Register through the academic and research route will be assessed under article nine (ESMQO)
All of the following criteria must be met.
1 Evidence of a period of General Professional Training (GPT)
of at least two years (24 months) following registration.
GPT is that completed after full registration and must include AS
A MINIMUM 12 months in approved training posts in specialties involving
DIRECT CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITY for patient care (laboratory based
posts with no direct clinical involvement or SHO posts in public health
medicine for example, would not be acceptable). The remainder can
be in any specialty providing clinical experience. Training counted
towards higher specialist training cannot also be counted towards
general professional training.
2 Evidence of possession of qualifications.
a) Primary Medical Qualification which has to be eligible for registration
with the GMC
b) A relevant post-graduate degree
Only original documents and authenticated copies of original documents
are accepted. They will be returned to you as soon as possible by
recorded or registered post as soon as they have been scrutinised.
3 Evidence that the applicant has derived specialist skills
and knowledge because of expertise gained from undertaking research
in the subject.

4 Evidence that the applicant has achieved the above to the
level required for practise as an independent and authoritative consultant
in the NHS or public health practitioner within the area of competence.

5 Reference forms.
As part of its decision making process the STA takes into consideration
the views of referees. Referees will be asked to provide details of
their own qualifications completing a structured questionnaire.

6 Published papers.
Evidence that the applicant has published several papers in high quality
peer-reviewed research journals. Please read Information
Sheet 5 (pt.7e(ii)) of this pack.
7 Evidence from the GMC of eligibility for full or limited
registration in the UK.
