Procedure of application – Overseas-trained doctors route
Applications will be considered in two stages. A fee is payable for consideration at each stage. Only applications made on the appropriate application form with the requisite documentation and fee will be considered.

Structured reference form in connection with an application for specialist registration in the UK
STAGE I
Scrutiny of CV, overseas qualification(s) and training programme against the Part I syllabus and Part II competencies and/or evidence of the offer of an NHS consultant post. A non-refundable fee of £610 is payable.
Please submit the following:
1. A full CV detailing all your medical qualifications, training courses attended, training posts held and lists of any publications etc. Please note that normally, a CV is not sufficient to give the detailed information which is required about the ways specific elements of the syllabus and competencies have been met. Read the following requirements carefully and submit information which will assist the assessors to know that all requirements have been fully met.
2. Full description and details of the relevant specialist programme overseas within which you obtained your public health medicine training, including verification of the entry requirements and exit qualifications which is published by the relevant training body.
3. Original documentation awarded by the appropriate training body of the country concerned that you have completed the full training programme including passing any examinations and formal assessment.
4. Evidence that you are eligible to undertake independent specialist practice in the country in which training was completed. If a certificate of specialist registration or the equivalent is not available from the country in which you trained or your country of origin a referee should be named who can comment authoritatively on the position held in that country. This should normally be a representative from the Health Service or academic system in that country.
5. Evidence of meeting Part I syllabus and Part II competencies. You should indicate by what means you have covered each requirement: through posts held, academic course or examination passed on the accompanying application form (see attached grid).
6. Confidential reports from at least three referees named by you who supervised you during your training in public health medicine or equivalent specialty or who were involved in the process which led to the award of your specialist qualifications. The referees should be of a national or international standing and should be able to provide structured confidential reports on your behalf with respect to your training, experience and competence.
7. Certificates from employers confirming your work in posts involving both theoretical and practical training in public health medicine or equivalent specialty if not covered by the confidential reports.
8. GMC registration - if you are registered with the GMC, then please provide your registration number. If you are not yet registered with the GMC, then please read the guidance note on GMC registration in Part A of this information pack.
STAGE II
Examination of a report or reports by you undertaken in the course of public health medicine practice demonstrating your work. You will be required to submit at least three and no more than five published papers and/or reports of your own work in public health medicine. This may include material submitted elsewhere for higher qualifications in public health medicine. After the initial assessment of your written work you will be invited to be interviewed by two independent assessors on the work submitted and demonstration of competencies and other topics in public health medicine practice as set out in the regulations and guidance for candidates for the Part II general oral examination. A fee of £500 is payable.

If your application is successful, you will be elected to Membership of the Faculty and must complete all requirements to become a Member in good standing. The Faculty will confirm exemption from all or part of MFPH and recommend inclusion on the Specialist Register to the STA. Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application for entry to the Specialist Register by the STA.
If your application is unsuccessful, the Faculty will indicate to the STA what further training or examinations you are required to obtain in order to meet the criteria for entry in the Specialist Register. The STA will consider the Faculty's recommendation and write to you.
The Faculty has an appeals procedure, copies of which are available from the Education & Training Department on request.
