Welcome news on illicit trade in tobacco products

Reacting to news that the UK Government has signed the WHO’s  Protocol to Eliminate the Illicit Trade In Tobacco Products, John Middleton, Vice President for the Faculty of Public Health, said:

“We welcome this announcement, which is an important step towards reducing the harm caused by tobacco to people’s health, particularly the nearly 600 children who start smoking every day.

"By signing this Protocol, the government is helping tackle the impact of the illicit tobacco trade, which undermines tax and health policies. We now need the UK government and all other EU states to ratify the Protocol so that is implemented.”
