Dr Amrit Kaur Purba is a social epidemiologist with an interdisciplinary background spanning clinical practice, public health policy and academia. She is an Assistant Professor and Wellcome Fellow at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, where she leads the Digital Determinants of Health Hub.
Her research examines how online environments and social media platforms influence adolescent health, wellbeing and digital inequalities. Drawing on her background across frontline healthcare, public health and academic research, she uses causal epidemiological methods and innovative approaches including social media data donation and generative AI to generate evidence that can inform safer and more equitable digital environments and public policy.
Previously based at the Oxford Internet Institute and the University of Cambridge, Amrit has a strong record of youth-centred and community-engaged research. Through the Digital Determinants of Health Hub, she works closely with young people, policymakers, practitioners and third-sector organisations to ensure research is shaped both by those affected by digital health challenges and those responsible for addressing them.
Her work has informed educators, health organisations, regulators and governments, and she has advised organisations and policymakers including the United Nations, 10 Downing Street and Ofcom. Her research has been published in leading journals including The BMJ, and her work and commentary have featured across national and international media including the BBC, The Times and The Scotsman.
Amrit has received multiple awards recognising the impact and communication of her research, including recognition from the University of Glasgow and the University of Cambridge's Talk Like TED Award for excellence in communicating research to public audiences.
