Nicola Close MBE HonMFPH

The Faculty of Public Health is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Nicola Close, outgoing Chief Executive of the Association of Directors of Public Health (ADPH).

Nicola joined ADPH as its first member of staff in 2007, and under her leadership the organisation has grown significantly in stature and influence, becoming a powerful voice for public health and for the vital role of the Director of Public Health at the highest levels of government and across the UK.

Her unwavering commitment to protecting and improving the nation's health and tackling health inequalities shaped a career that spanned nearly two decades at the helm of ADPH.

The Faculty awarded Honorary Membership to Nicola in 2010 in recognition of her contribution to the profession, and she received an MBE for services to public health in 2024.

She will be remembered by colleagues across the sector for her leadership, compassion, professionalism and strategic vision, as well as her generosity of spirit and her willingness to support and inspire others.

ADPH has published its own tribute to Nicola, and the Faculty's thoughts are with her family, friends and all our colleagues at ADPH at this very difficult time.
