Academic Public Health: Early Careers Advice Hour

22nd April 2026, 11:30am - 12:30pm, Online

The FPH Academic Public Health SIG is hosting an informal early careers advice drop-in session and funding clinic for anyone interested in developing an academic public health career.

This session is open to public health practitioners, specialty registrars, consultants and early career academics who are considering applying for research funding now or in the future.

Our panel will include academic public health specialists at different career stages, with experience across a range of research areas and funders. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions about funding pathways, developing competitive applications, timing, supervision and career planning in a supportive environment.

Event panelists:

  • Prof Ruth Kipping - Professor of Public Health at University of Bristol, Honorary Consultant in Public Health
  • Dr Dan Lewer - Honorary Associate Professor at University College London, Epidemiology & Public Health and Consultant in Public Health
  • Dr Sarah Sowden – Dept Director NIHR Research Support Service Specialist Centre for Public Health delivered by Newcastle and partners, Senior Clinical Lecturer Newcastle University & Public Health Consultant, Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (North East)
  • The Academic Public Health SIG co-chairs; Drs Seb Walsh, Cat Pinho-Gomes and Joanna McLaughlin – who have all had/have various fellowships and funding through their public health speciality training, and are active early to mid-career public health researchers

All panelists have experience of supervising or supporting public health trainees, practitioners or academics interested in early career public health research or first explorations of academic public health, and this is where we will focus the session.

Whether you are exploring options or preparing an application, this session offers practical insight and advice.
