Can food sustainability and accessibility co-exist? A discussion of challenges, trade-offs, and solutions

15th September 2025, 2:00pm - 3:30pm , Online

The Faculty's Sustainable Development, Food, and Poverty SIGs are hosting a webinar to explore what sustainable, climate-friendly diets entail and the impacts that a lack of access to such diets has on individuals and households.

This 90-minute webinar will feature a lecture by Dr. Marco Springmann, who will clarify myths and misconceptions about the climate impact and sustainability of various foods and dietary patterns and help attendees understand how changing diets can contribute to reducing the environmental footprint of our food system.

A joint talk by Dr. Rachel Loopstra and Dr. Maddy Power will then guide attendees through the current situation of household food insecurity in the UK, its impacts on families and children, and some potential challenges and trade-offs when balancing the priorities of sustainability and food access.

A spotlight case study will follow with Food Savers Network CEO Juli Thompson discussing the aims of the programme: improving access to food in a sustainable way, while also supporting the development of financial resilience.

This webinar will explore the importance and challenges of implementing sustainable, climate-friendly food policy locally, with a particular focus on accessibility and equity for people living in poverty who struggle to afford a healthy diet.
