Poverty, housing, and healthy places

4th February 2026, 11:30am - 12:30pm, Online

Our homes are an essential building block for health, yet too many people live in housing that is unaffordable, unsafe or unsuitable. The UK housing system is broken, with high rents and limited affordable social housing driving temporary homelessness, particularly in households already living in poverty.

This webinar, chaired by Dr Tom Simcock from the University of Huddersfield, will explore housing, health and poverty with a focus on the private rented sector. You will hear about work to develop a local measure of household overcrowding and opportunities to mitigate the harms of overcrowding.

We will also present research on the health impacts of selective licensing, an approach that can be used to improve housing in the private rented sector.
