FPH statement on an inclusive approach to language

Led by the Faculty’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee, the Faculty of Public Health Board has agreed to endorse and adopt the NIHR Journals Library Good Practice Guide: Inclusive Language as a guiding document for language relating to protected and marginalised groups.

Adoption of this guidance is intended to support the Faculty in forming a systematic approach to using language relating to protected and marginalised groups as part of embedding EDI good practice across the breadth of the Faculty’s work.

Properly and deliberately using inclusive language is an essential part of any organisation’s commitment to principles of equity and inclusion, and the Faculty will be sharing this guidance with our Committees, Special Interest Groups, staff team, and wider membership.

The Faculty also recognises that language evolves over time, and led by our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee we will continue to review relevant evidence and make recommendations to ensure that our approach remains culturally competent and up-to-date.
