FPH welcomes Parliament debate on fossil fuel advertising

The Faculty of Public Health (FPH) welcomes the parliamentary debate and supports a ban on fossil fuel advertising.

Climate change, largely caused by the burning of fossil fuels, has been identified by the World Health Organisation as the greatest threat to human health of the 21st century.

While we understand that a just transition to renewables from fossil fuels will take time, the advertising and lobbying by the fossil fuel industries is building in unnecessary delay and increasing misinformation and doubt.

Across the UK we are already seeing increases in deaths, disease, and long-term health conditions caused by climate change. The biggest impact is being felt by our most vulnerable populations such as babies and children, older people, and those on low incomes, and is adding to the costs of running our NHS and social care systems.
