Diplomate Exam – Associate Examiner vacancies
Are you a Public Health Specialty Registrar or Faculty member who has passed both the Diplomate and Final Membership exams, are looking to become more involved with the work of FPH and contribute to the future development of the exams? If so, the role of Associate Examiner could be for you!
The Diplomate and Final Exam Development Committees are looking to recruit up to five associate examiners for each exam for an initial pilot programme to expand the examiner pool and enhance professional development for registrars.
For registrars the role will provide a unique development opportunity, an opportunity to get more involved in the work of the FPH, and the possibility to sign-off curriculum Learning Outcomes. For the FPH, the roles will add to the potential pool of examiners and question setters, provide an opportunity for greater engagement with senior registrars and early career Consultants, and provide a valuable resource of experience from individuals who have recently gone through the FPH examination process.
The role of an associate Diplomate Examiner will be to:
- Contribute to the development of exam questions and marking criteria, as well as their subsequent review and standard setting.
- Attend question setting meetings, examiner training events and standard setting meetings.
- Contribute to these sessions as full members of the group.
It should be noted that associate examiners will not to be involved in selecting questions for individual exam sittings, mark summative exam scripts, or contribute to Board of Examiners meetings where the results of individual candidates are discussed and agreed.
Training:
- Associate DFPH and MFPH Examiners will have access to the same training and support as that offered to full examiners prior to commencing work on question development.
- This starts the training progress at an earlier stage than is currently possible whilst ensuring individuals are post-CCT upon acceptance as full examiners.
- For 2026, the examiner training days will be held on 18th and 19th June in person in central London. Please email educ@fph.org.uk for more details.
Progression: Associate DFPH Examiners will be eligible for transition to full DFPH examiner on achieving Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). The relevant exam committee will retain discretion over the process, in the same way as for all current examiners.
Learning outcomes: These learning outcomes could potentially be met by the Registrar performing the Associate Examiner role:
- 3.1 (Demonstrate knowledge of current national and international policies and strategies that affect health and wellbeing)
- 4.2 (Demonstrate appropriate presentation, communication and listening skills, as appropriate for the audience or individual. Communicate in a clear written format and in presentations to a number of different organisations and audiences)
- 8.9 (Deliver and evaluate education and training activities for academic or service audiences in a wide range of virtual and in person formats, for large and small groups)
- 9.11 (Demonstrate honesty and integrity in professional and personal practice)
- 10.1 (Selects and uses advanced public health knowledge, skills and tools appropriately for different tasks to deliver timely results)
- 10.3 (Promotes and advocates an evidence based and evaluative approach to scope public health problems and deliver solutions)
- 10.10 (Uses and promotes public health principles and core values),
Time commitment: Associate Examiners would be expected to attend one question setting meeting and a minimum of one day’s training/standard setting per year (up to two days optional maximum).
In addition, associate examiners would be expected to develop new questions and edit previously proposed questions following feedback. Experience from existing examiners suggests that this could take up to an additional two days maximum.
Eligibility: Applicants must have passed both the Diplomate and Final Membership exams within the last seven years and if in training, have the support of their Educational Supervisor and Training programme Director to apply for this role.
How to apply: If you would like to apply, please email educ@fph.org.uk by 9am on Tuesday 26th May with:
- an expression of interest including experience in educational development and/or medical education
- confirmation that you have passed both exams
- a copy of your CV outlining your previous experience
- confirmation of support from your Educational Supervisor and Training Programme Director.
- your CCT date.
Recruitment process:
- Assessment of applications will be performed by the relevant committee chair and delegated committee representatives. Recruitment of associate examiners beyond the numbers stated above will be at the discretion of the relevant chair.
- Initially, recruitment will be for both exams. If the pilots are successful, there will be subsequent recruitment rounds. There may also be recruitment rounds in the future for either the DFPH or MFPH alone, depending on the needs for each exam.
