MFPH Associate Examiners

Details of the associate examiner role and how to apply

Final Membership Exam – Associate Examiner vacancies

Are you a Public Health Specialty Registrar or Faculty member who has passed both the Diplomate and Final Membership exams, are looking to become more involved with the work of FPH and contribute to the future development of the exams? If so, the role of Associate Examiner could be for you!

The Diplomate and Final Exam Development Committees are looking to recruit up to five associate examiners for each exam for an initial pilot programme to expand the examiner pool and enhance professional development for registrars.

For registrars the role will provide a unique development opportunity, an opportunity to get more involved in the work of the FPH, and the possibility to sign-off curriculum Learning Outcomes. For the FPH, the roles will add to the potential pool of examiners and question setters, provide an opportunity for greater engagement with senior registrars and early career Consultants, and provide a valuable resource of experience from individuals who have recently gone through the FPH examination process.

The role of an associate Final Membership Examiner will be to:
●    Attend one question writing training session a year.
●    Develop one new question and early ideas for OSPHE stations based on real-life experience of working in a Public Health setting.
●    Review two questions a year.
●    Observe one diet of the OSPHE.
●    Shadow mark one question at one of the sittings.

It should be noted that associate examiners will not take part in further question development or question selection for exams. Associate examiners’ marks when shadow marking will not contribute to the summative assessment of candidates.

Training:

  • Associate DFPH and MFPH Examiners will have access to the same training and support as that offered to full examiners.
  • This starts the training progress at an earlier stage than is currently possible whilst ensuring individuals are post-CCT upon acceptance as full examiners.
  • Associate Examiners will be asked to attend one or more development sessions to be trained as an MFPH examiner prior to their CCT date but would only contribute to direct examination of candidates post-CCT.
  • Training will include scenario development and contribution to the development of exam stations. This may be provided in conjunction with training given to full examiners.

Training date TBC

Progression: Associate examiners will have an informal assessment at the end of their training period to mimic the current assessment that examiners undertake, with a further formal assessment when post-CCT/in a consultant role prior to acceptance as a full examiner.

Eligibility: Applicants must have passed both the Diplomate and Final Membership exams within the last seven years and if in training, have the support of their Educational Supervisor and Training programme Director to apply for this role.

Time commitment:  In order to complete all the various tasks detailed in the role description, an individual programme will be agreed between the individual and Chair on appointment. Such a programme could be spread across two years.
